Oooh, what sound does it make? I'm always intrigued by new push notifications. I hope it's the noise the website makes. Pop!

I think it was the same sound that is used for SMS and MMS alerts. It has stopped working today for some reason.

Phht...what a cop out dude. Now you're gonna booey unix based on specific software, designed for unix, among specific personal networks of colleagues. You can tell your "real story" to IDC and hope they change their market research methods!

IDC talks about revenues and number of boxes. I'm talking about actual environnements. ;)

One day, when you work in IT, you'll understand what the real workhorse of the industry is.

What I learned today: Mac users are hipster douches who think they are tech savvy, but still too dumb to run Windows.

    i can't feel...my face.

if i use both, am i a double douche?

Haven't heard anyone mention about the email performance of .mac. I have two accounts and you can never depend on email arriving promptly. I've sometimes waited several hours for email to show up.

Their is no way in Hell our government is gonna switch over to OSX so that is your answer.;)

Obama uses Mac's, has used Apple OS X systems personally for years, and there has been talk of the military defense considering OS X systems. Well, now that XServe is gone LOL ;)

Why would Apple do what has failed all other manufactures during the time Apple's one model mantra have eaten sales from other manufactures?

Because now Android with a range of sizes is eating iPhone sales.

Go into a Best Buy and look at all the Androids with larger screens, and some with smaller screens and lower prices. Apple needs to compete with that...

The fact that congress cannot construct a budget is simply a failure of them to perform their duties. Part of the reason is that the motivation to avoid a shutdown isn't great enough, thus I propose a two-fold solution to motivate them a little

    1) Congress persons do not get paid during the shutdown. Perhaps if they were to not get paid they would be more motivated.

    2) In the event of a shutdown all members of congress immediately become ineligible to run for re-election for their current position and ineligible to run in any other federal election. Since a shutdown means they've failed, they shouldn't be allowed to continue.

First off, nice location! :D (born/raised in Omaha)

I'd go a bit further on your first solution. If they don't pass a budget by a given day, not only do they not get paid during the shutdown, but their pay goes towards keeping the government running while they work on that budget. In short, if they don't pass it, they work for free until they get it.

I still say that during the SOTU, Obama should have told everyone that he is putting the presidential salary towards the budget, and have asked Congress to do the same. Then sit back and see what they do. If they don't, they would have shown who they really are to their constituents. This goes for both Blues, Reds, and any/all parties inbetween.

    BL.

Will all the resellers buying all the AT&T versions I call BS on those stats.

Go to a store and I guarantee you can't buy an at&t model, but vzw are in stock everywhere.

There is NO way Vzw is outselling AT&T version, NO way, it's impossible.

My guess is maybe people in the mid-west would PREFER vzw, but they'll never buy one anyway...

I agree, I waited on line on launch day. The first iPads to be sold out were the AT&T models, then WiFi, then Verizon.

I have heard of Folding@home at it sounds interesting. I like the idea of helping scientists with their experiments.

Unfortunately I have two problems with this.

    1) Ultimately where does all this research go? Who is benefitting from it all? I can't help but think that all this research will just enable some multi-billion dollar drug company to come up with some pill that they can patent and make billions of more dollars. I tried reading the faqs of Folding@home, but it does not really say where all this research is going. I am sure the scientists mean well with their research, but ultimately they will not be the ones creating the drugs to cure these diseases. Drug companies will be doing that, and they are strictly profit oriented.

    2) My electricity prices are going up by about 10% so I really don't like the idea of my iMac running 24-7 eating up electricity, and adding to the wear and tear of my system. I'm not sure what the monthly cost would be running Folding@home, but I'm sure it adds up.

Can anyone here comment on these concerns?

Well you do have a point. I can't really comment about it, other than that I don't know.

And yes, electricity costs do add up. But I still believe that it's a good thing to do

No it won't convert the PC fanboys or the increasingly popular 'I can be offended quicker than you can' crowd but I really doubt those are the target audience. The ads are humorous and hit exactly the kind of audience from which 'switchers' come from - those dissatisfied with their PC experience.

Apple isn't trying to take over the entire computer market - way too many people you wouldn't want as customers in that crowd. Just getting the kind that do find the commercials humorous and 'on the mark' with the added controversy the commercials themselves spawn is probably more than enough. Look at this thread - if I'd were leaning towards Macs and ran into the PC sourpusses here I'd get one just to provoke them further. Humorless people need to be taunted and provoked at every opportunity - they will either grow or explode, both steps up.

The "Apple Tax" is largely just in the mind. PC Magazine, and several tech blogs, have had comparisons and found that a Mac is cheaper than machines from some Windows machines (I think Sony and Dell were more expensive but I could be wrong). Out of five tested, the Mac was in the middle.

I did the math, and gave it up after I had consistently lousy experiences with every version of Windows I used, with hardware from a variety of well known manufacturers.

I will happily spend the imaginary premium if it provides with a stable operating system.

Hats off to everyone for keeping this up and running.

    Dale

Actually Dale - hats off to you for resurrecting the challenge. While I enjoy many of the threads in MR, this is by far the one of greatest interest to me. Taking on a challenge and working to achieve it in an image; getting specific feedback from others ... these are invaluable. Thanks much.

Now to figure out "beauty in unexpected places". this one is, for me, a much harder concept. At least, to do so without being cliche.

Just checked into an Apple Store in Salem, NH - they have high end Verizon iPad 2 and they have had them regularly. Asians have been scooping up the stores other versions each morning in cash sales (or purchasing mall gift cards and Apple gift cards).

They said consumer demand is much greater for AT&T (GSM) iPad 2 than Verizon.

I'll wait for my wifi iPad 2 to arrive in the mail sometime next week.

My bet is on the RFID being used as a payment device.
Especially since :apple: stores are already good about automating the purchase process (with emailed reciepts and the like), and with Apple recently changing their in-store handheld payment devices, with the fact that Apple currently maintains a record of your payment methods. So associating your previous payment/billing method with the rfid in your phone would allow them to easily scan you previously-purchased phone, confirm against your ID then have you on your way with your purchase.
Such as when I was in to purchase my 1st-gen iPhone, I used a credit card. Then when I upgraded to 3GS they just asked if I wanted to use the same card. It kinda shocked me that they were keeping that info, but it was quite convenient. But the only reason they were able to use my previous method was because they already knew it was me (because I was upgrading my phone). Other visits where I was just buying an accessory, I still had to whip-out my card and go through the whole process.
If they have the RFID in the phone, then they could possibly use this for any/all other purchases (not just new iPhones).
AND it would also allow them to identify a phone's owner if the phone were lost or stolen and returned to their store. As well as ensure that
Additionally, they could also use it to be sure that the phone returned to them is the SAME phone that was sold, so there wouldn't be any consumer fraud.
This would mean a decrease in profit-loss, which would eventually be passed on to consumers. :-)

Huh, my push notifications weren't working, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I went to the settings and I'm apparently running Facebook 3.1.1, but when I go to iTunes, it says the app is at 3.1 and I have no updates.

Odd. But maybe they've fixed the sound issues already.

I've noticed the same. I deleted FB from both iPhone and iTunes, then downloaded it thru iTunes since it states there that it is v3.1, but once on the iPhone it is still v3.1.1 and still, no notifications.

This really isn't worth losing sleep over, but it's really pissing me off.

Might buy a macbook or maybe just Leo and save up for a MBP. Not sure yet.
